A footbridge in Hoole is closed today (Wednesday, June 11) for safety reasons.

The Station View footbridge on Westminster Road crosses the railway to the east of Chester Station.

The 63 metre long footbridge built in 1961 is owned by Cheshire West and Chester Council and has recently undergone a detailed inspection and structural check by engineers.

They found that the bridge is substandard and needs to be closed as a safety precaution.

In the shorter term the adjacent road bridge will be closed to traffic to allow pedestrians and cyclists to use it safely. A diversion route will be in place for vehicles.

Engineers from Cheshire West and Chester Council will be working closely with Network Rail to find a longer term solution. The duration of the closure is not yet known.
