One of Chester’s longstanding historians was among a group of Cestrians recognised for their exceptional contribution to the city over the years at a special ceremony last night (Wednesday, January 21).

Len Morgan who is well known in Chester for his history enthusiasm and love of the city, was formally granted an Honorary Freeman of the Borough at a reception at Chester Town Hall hosted by local dignitaries including Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWaC) leader Sam Dixon, Cllr Razia Daniels, Cllr Mike Jones, CWaC CEO Steve Robinson and Cllr Bob Rudd.

Kathy Benn MBE, Laurie Curry, Andrew Miller, Major Eddie Pickering, Christine Russell and Roger Parkin were also given the honour, which is the highest a council can bestow on a member of society.

'Highest honour'

A speech was given by Cllr Daniels which highlighted the dedication Len has given to promoting Chester as a historic city, including his many slideshows, books, calendars, newspaper articles and taking groups on his famous Cemetery Walks, donating all proceeds to the Hospice of the Good Shepherd.

Len, who said he was ‘overwhelmed and lost for words’, thanked everyone involved in his nomination and made special mention to his wife Joan and their three children David, Peter and Susan, who were all present to see him receive his award.

He also made special mention of Elaine Pierce-Jones from Chester’s History & Heritage Centre, a place Len has been heavily involved with over the years. Elaine described him as ‘a wonderful man and role model.’
