A MAN who runs a website promoting Chester’s heritage is appealing for donations to keep it running.
Steve Howe, of Lime Grove, Hoole, runs Chester: A Virtual Stroll Around The Walls (www.chesterwalls.info).
“The site has been run as a free gift to the city, its people and visitors for nearly 15 years,” he said.
“But the site has got so large that I need advertising and donations to keep it going.”
He recently received a donation from a “Cestrian now living in Silicon Valley USA”, who gave him £100 “to promote the great city”.
However, Steve is concerned the Walls are falling into disrepair and more should be done by those closer to home to keep them well-maintained.
He said: “The Walls are a major feature of our tourism industry but both previous and current councils have both used them as a political football.
“People are very angry about the way they have been allowed to degenerate.”
Letters from all over the world pour in to the website, which receives 60,000 hits per month, with many asking why we don’t look after heritage sites.
“We don’t even have the towers open any more - they are gated off and been allowed to fall into disrepair.”
“It wouldn’t cost the council much to have them open, and there are plenty of volunteers who are willing to help.”
Harriet Woodcock of Chester City Council said: “A major cash injection to help pay for improvements to City Walls towers was announced in July when we secured a grant of £500,000 from the European Union towards a £1.1 million joint scheme.
“It will also pay for an important study to investigate how the Walls can help boost the local economy.
“We are also working on a programme to remove weeds and other vegetation from the rest of the Walls.”
