A CHESTER-based health club and spa devised a day programme to prepare a team of hard-working teenagers from Chester Youth Club (CYC) for a life-changing expedition to Gambia.

The Club and Spa at Hoole Hall invited the 11 CYC members to a send-off event at the luxury venue located within the grounds of the DoubleTree by Hilton Chester, before their charitable adventure to West Africa.

CYC youth coordinator, Linda Eite, said: “The CYC youth activity programme is full of projects that enable our members to fulfil their potential and gain valuable life skills.

“The Gambia 2012 expedition will allow our members to make a real difference to the lives of 11 young Gambian students.”

Club and Spa general manager Darren Dixon said: “The idea was to get the members in the right mind frame before their departure. We arranged a high-energy fitness class, selected spa treatments and full use of our facilities.”

The day concluded with a presentation of the volunteer’s Gambia 2012 exhibition hoodies within the hotel’s converted barn, the Abbey Suite.

Darren added: “We look forward to welcoming the group back, hearing their stories and celebrating their hard work.”

The members of CYC travelled to Kajabang, a part of the Gunjur Village situated in rural Gambia, to complete a community project to help decorate schools and assist with other activities for the students.

To gain a place on the expedition the group was required to secure £100 from local business professionals to fund 12 months of schooling for a Gambian student.

The Chester Youth Club is based in Handbridge and has more than 100 children attending each week.
