Chester is one of the happiest cities in the UK when it comes to getting on with the neighbours.

That's according to home assistance company HomeServe, who conducted a nationwide survey of more than 2,000 homeowners in the country.

The poll reveals that unique community spirit is very much alive and kicking in our city, with Chester coming third in the country's 'happiest neighbourhood' hotspots.

The most important qualities for a 'nice neighbour' included trust, friendliness, helpfulness, consideration and being vigilant. More than 83% of homeowners said their own neighbours have gone out of their way to help them and many know and interact with their neighbours regularly.

Preston tops the chart, followed by Dundee in second place, but Chester is ranked ahead of cities like Swansea, Wolverhampton, Cambridge, Oxford and Nottingham.

John Greaves, HomeServe's Brand Director, said; “We like to do things differently at HomeServe, which is why we wanted to focus on the positives and show that – despite what other surveys might say – we are a nation of happy neighbours who go out of their way to help make life easier for each other, just like we do for our customers. It seems Chester, in particular, is full of happy neighbours.

“We hear stories every day from our engineers across the UK about the examples of neighbourliness they’ve seen and we wanted to uncover what qualities set those really great neighbours apart, and celebrate our community spirit," he added.
