A MEMORIAL for missing cruise ship worker Rebecca Coriam will stand on the summit of Africa’s highest mountain forever to show she will never be forgotten.

Just days after the second anniversary of her daughter’s disappearance from the Disney Wonder cruise liner, Rebecca’s mum Ann has told of her battle to trek to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in her memory.

Ann, 53, from Guilden Sutton, trekked more than 19,000ft in baking heat and camped in sub-zero temperatures to raise £5,000 for Victim Support and help fulfil one of her adventurous daughter’s ‘greatest dreams’.

And despite not being able to complete the final trek to the summit after being forced to stop at Kibo due to severe altitude sickness, a memorial plaque celebrating Rebecca’s – known as Bex to friends and family – life was placed on the summit by Jackson, her determined guide.

“It was a real challenge,” said Ann, who added her husband Mike placed another memorial stone at a Catholic church in Moshi, Tanzania, so friends and family could remember Bex without having to climb the mountain.

“I was going to have to leave it at Kibo, but Jackson decided to keep going and it is now placed under the sign at the very top. It was quite extraordinary to get permission, they don’t let them leave anything on the mountain, it is so dangerous up there.

“Jackson has been scaling the summit for 20 years and he has never seen anything there before. It is the only one and I am so grateful to him, just one slip and he would have fallen to his death.

“It was an amazing challenge but I would never do it again, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. But it is incredible to think the plaque will be up there forever.”

The Coriam family were due to climb up Snowdon on Friday to mark the second anniversary of Bex’s disappearance, but were forced to postpone the trip due to snow.

“We are hoping to go up this weekend, but it is looking like we are going to have more snow,” said Ann, who said the family were now focusing their attention on launching a legal battle against Disney and trying to get the laws governing cruise ships changed.

Meanwhile Rachael, Bex’s sister, is training hard to run the London Marathon with two of her colleagues from the Doubletree by Hilton in memory of her sports-mad sister who was just 24 when she vanished.

Rachael, 27, is hoping to raise £6,000 for the Hilton in the Community Foundation which helps young people living in the local area.
