CHESTER Cycling Campaign has put General Election candidates for the City of Chester constituency on the spot.

The organisation is supporting action to improve conditions on the roads to encourage the maximum use of the most sustainable mode of transport for local journeys – the bicycle.

All the nominated hopefuls for the General Election have been asked to give their views on its ‘cycling manifesto’ and to ask for their commitment to its aim to double cycle use within 10 years, making cycling mainstream in the longer term.

Simon Brown, from Chester Cycling Campaign, said: “We wanted to get a commitment from all the candidates to support the aim of the cycling manifesto to help make our local area much more pleasant and sustainable in the long term.

“Central government has a major role to promote the sort of culture which is present in Denmark or Holland where the bicycle is seen as the perfectly normal and sensible mode of transport for short local journeys.

“Such a culture change requires both central and local government support and resources, and will provide significant payoffs right across the country through investment in health and quality of life.”

Mr Brown added: “Chester Cycling Campaign intends to highlight the responses made by local candidates to this approach over the next few weeks prior to the election so that electors can include this issue in their considerations over voting.”
