Knitters in Chester have helped create a seven-mile long pink scarf to mark the anniversary of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki in 1945.

Earlier this month members of Chester CND (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament) produced 85m of knitting, to become part of the scarf, which has been created by more than 5,000 people from around Britain and overseas.

The scarf was unfurled between the nuclear weapons establishments Aldermaston and Burghfield on the anniversary of the bombing of Nagasak almost 70 years ago.

The event was as a visual protest against the UK government’s plan to renew our nuclear weapons system (Trident) in 2016, after the next General Election. Estimated to cost taxpayers more than £100 billion over its lifetime, the protesters called for the money to be spent on public services and social security rather than on an expensive weapons system that can never be used.
