Children in Chester have taken colouring to the top level to advise city leaders.

Youngsters aged five-10, from St Clare’s Catholic Primary School in Lache, have worked in partnership with Ellesmere Port-based community interest company Passion for Learning and Storyhouse for five weeks to decide the official colours that will be used for furniture, signage and paint for the dedicated state-of-the-art children’s library housed in the brand new £37m cultural centre.

A group of 15 pupils have been taking part in after school clubs, provided by Passion for Learning, designed to help children achieve their full potential by learning through play.

The pupils are also engaged in a digital storytelling project with partner Storyhouse.

Artistic director of Storyhouse Alex Clifton said: “We are thrilled with the colours the children have chosen, and hope they feel inspired by what their creativity and opinions can achieve.”

There was a buzz amongst the group as they discussed which shades would look best.

Headteacher Marian Ryder said: “The opening of Storyhouse next year has excited everyone and Matthew Lockett, Klaiton Maclean and Lily Smith can’t wait to see their designs in action.”

The children were asked to vote for their favourite colour from a chart created by design agency Demco Interiors.

Next year the children will take part in a hard hat tour of the new library – where it is intended their after school clubs will often take place.
