Parents and carers of pupils of Bishops’ Blue Coat CE High School have been urged to monitor their children’s social media use after some have reportedly befriended someone on social media who has posted indecent images and words on their accounts.

A letter from deputy headteacher and safeguarding lead Peter Coates informed parents and carers that the school has been made aware of ‘a very small number of children’ whose accounts have been affected.

“This is a concern as the identity of the person is not known,” Mr Coates wrote.

“As a result, we have been in touch with the police and information will be forwarded to them.”

Parents and carers have been advised to ‘review the content and appropriateness of your son or daughter’s social media use and ensure that their account settings are set to the highest level of security’.

Mr Coates told The Chronicle: “We had concerns raised from an anonymous source and we wanted to alert parents so they can be vigilant in order to safeguard and protect their children.”

Insp Brian Green, from Chester Outer Neighbourhood Policing Unit, said: “It has been brought to our attention and we treat all reports of this nature very seriously. As in all cases such as this, we will follow every line of inquiry.

“We would ask parents to be vigilant when their children are using social media, and to get in touch if they find anything suspicious.”
