A CHESTER bakery store has played its part in a new record – for the world’s most expensive wedding cake.

The six-tier, £32.4m wedding cake, which features 4,104 diamonds, was designed by Jules and Tim Smith of Cake.

The City Road-based store was looking to do something special to promote the upcoming National Gay Wedding Show in Liverpool, to be held at the BT convention centre.

Baker Tim Smith said: “The idea we had been mooting for a while and we suggested this as one of the things we could do to raise awareness of the event.

“The organisers came back and said the world’s most expensive wedding cake was something which could be done.

“The jewellers used (Russell and Case) had just made the world’s most expensive baby’s dummy using platinum, so the organisers knew they would be happy to be part of this.

“My wife Jules has been the artist and designed the cake. To be able to be part of this has been great – how often does this kind of opportunity come about?

“It took us five days to make, although we did not get our hands on the diamonds until fairly late and we had to put them on carefully, one by one. Each one had its place and you have to make sure not to drop any.

“I know there is a lot going on with the recession, but this is only a bit of fun, it’s not to be taken seriously and it has been fantastic to be part of this – we feel very honoured.”

The National Gay Wedding Show takes place on March 3 and will be a celebration of marriage for all couples regardless of their sexuality and is ideal for anyone planning a wedding or civil partnership.
