Firs School pupil Milan Kustos has been selected by Cheshire and North Wales Chess Association as one of 16 players to represent the region in the English Primary Schools Chess Association Northern Team Championships.

Milan, nine, competed in the Northern Team Championships winning through against players representing Lancashire, Manchester, Nottinghamshire, Oldham, Staffordshire, Tameside, Wirral and Yorkshire and will be part of the team representing Cheshire and North Wales in the National finals in Nottingham on April 26.

Milan has been a pupil at The Firs School in Chester since Year 2 and attends chess classes after school there. He has been interested in chess since he was five, when he was taught by his grandfather. He has many chess heroes and often practices with his Mum after school, admitting to some games going beyond bedtime!

Milan who lives in Chester said: “The competition has been tough so far and we were all really pleased to get through to the finals. There were three rounds of chess where points were awarded but the rounds weren’t timed.”

Headteacher, Margaret Denton said: “We are so proud of Milan who is a real wizard at chess.

“Numerous studies show improved concentration and cognitive development amongst children at schools where chess is taught and we are delighted to have a champion here at the school.”
