A CAMPAIGN has been launched to boost the number of school governors.

Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Hands up to be a school governor initiative aims to raise interest in the voluntary role.

Schools are run by governing bodies working with the headteacher, staff, parents and the community, for the benefit of pupils.

People aged over 18 are eligible to become a school governor and they do not require any special qualifications. They also do not need to have a child at a school.

The campaign was launched at Dee Point Primary School in Blacon on Monday.

Councillor Adrian Walmsley, chairman of the council’s governors appointments panel, said: “I would really encourage people to seriously consider volunteering to be a school governor.

“It’s an immensely rewarding role. We give full, ongoing training and support to help governors carry out their duties.

“I regularly meet governors and I am always delighted and surprised at the different ways in which they support and enrich the school communities that they serve.”

John Stephens, director of children and young people’s services, added: “Governors make an enormous and important contribution to schools and to improving outcomes for children.

“School governors are the largest group of volunteers in the country. The work is hugely rewarding and I would encourage people to volunteer to undertake this important community role.”
