Cheshire Phoenix Basketball Team is throwing its weight behind the White Ribbon Campaign led in Chester by local charity Chester Women’s Aid.

Representatives of the charity joined Cheshire Phoenix players, to hand out white ribbons before the basketball team’s home game on Sunday, November 16, at the Northgate Arena. Cheshire Phoenix volunteers will all wear their ribbons at the game and information about the campaign will be on display.

November 25 is International Day for the Eradication of Violence against Women and is represented by the white ribbon. It is a day for men and women to stand together and condemn the violence that a minority of men perpetrate against women and girls.

Spokesman for the team, Andrew Donaldson, said “It is so important that men, particularly sportsmen, get behind this campaign to show that such violence is unacceptable.”

The charity is also holding a public event in Chester next weekend to raise funds to support local families experiencing domestic abuse. Chairperson, Lee Rean, said: “We are very grateful to Cheshire Phoenix for giving their very public support to this campaign. In the UK on average a woman is killed every 2 days by a partner or ex-partner and this cannot continue.”
