Drivers are urged to take extra care as heavy downpours and flooding continue to affect driving conditions across the region.

Flood warnings and alerts have been issued by the Environment Agency across the North West which is expected to have an affect on driving conditions.

Persistent outbreaks of rain are expected across Cheshire West and Chester today and drivers are advised to check road conditions and the weather forecast before setting out.

Highways England are working around the clock to remove water, clear drains, and help keep traffic moving.

The Met Office offers the following advice for motorists driving in wind and rain:

Avoid starting your journey until heavy downpours clear.

• Choose to take main roads where you are less likely to be exposed to fallen branches and debris and flooding.

• Grip your steering wheel firmly with both hands as gusts of wind can unsettle vehicles – this is particularly important when planning to overtake.

• Gaps between trees, buildings, bridges over a river or railways are places you are more likely to be exposed to side winds.

• Roads will be more slippery than usual in wet weather so be sure to give yourself more time to react when approaching a hazard and increase the following gap to at least four seconds from the moving traffic in front.

• On flooded roads, think before driving through deep water. Don’t stop in standing water and drive through the highest section of the road slowly.
