Improvement works to a bridge on the M56 are causing delays for motorists in Cheshire today (Saturday, July 25).

A four-mile stretch of the westbound M56, where it crosses the M53, closed on Friday night and will remain shut until 10am on Sunday (July 26) while the bridge is resurfaced and waterproofed.

There are reports of queuing traffic between junction 10 for the A49 and junction 15 of the M53.

Disgruntled motorists have been taking to social media to vent their irritation about the weekend closure.

Mark Mosley, project manager at Highways England, said they were carrying the work out at the weekend because the motorway is 'quieter and drivers will be able to follow clearly-signed diversion routes'.

The eastbound carriageway will remain open as normal.
