Routine maintenance work on the motorways will be suspended over the festive period, but motorists could still face some travel disruption on the M6 and M53.

Ongoing resurfacing of the M53 at junction two (Moreton Spur) has seen closures between 10pm and 5am each night, though these will be suspended from 6am on Wednesday, December 23 and 00.01am on Saturday, January 2.

On the M6, at the key exchange with the M56, 50mph limits are controlling traffic between junctions 19 and 20.

These will remain in place over Christmas and the new year. This is part of a £14.5m safety project including bridge repairs and new barriers.

Between junctions 16 and 19, drivers might also run into congestion caused by lane closures put in place to clear vegetation and conduct surveys. These will be stopped over Christmas and new year, with the main smart motorway project starting in 2016.
