The leader of Cheshire East Council has tonight (Tuesday, December 8) told members of the Conservative party he is to resign.
Bunbury ward Cllr Michael Jones has been under growing pressure to quit because of the controversy surrounding the awarding of fitness contracts to his personal physiotherapist.
At a group meeting tonight he told fellow Tories he intends to stand down.
The Chronicle understands an election for the new leader of the Conservative group will be held on January 14. It is expected that the new leader of the council will be appointed at the next full meeting of Cheshire East Council after that.
A reliable source from within the Conservative party told the Chronicle tonight Cllr Jones had been upset by the allegations of bullying and that was why he was resigning.
He is adamant he has done nothing wrong.
“He will not support a ‘blue on blue’ attack within the party and he has decided to give notice to quit,” said the insider.
“He was asked nine times to reconsider and there were some people in tears.”
Cllr Jones has not yet commented but did announce at today’s cabinet meeting he was going to make an announcement at 12 noon tomorrow (Wednesday).
He did not say what this referred to but it is expected he will give notice of his intention to resign then.
