The Chairman of Chester Mystery Plays has received her British Empire Medal after being named in the Queen’s New Year Honours list.

Jo Sykes, who has been involved with the city’s medieval pageant since the 1960s, was invested with the honour at a ceremony at Tatton Park last month.

On behalf of Her Majesty The Queen, The Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire David Briggs MBE presented awards to Jo, of Rossett, for services to drama in Chester, Graham Spencer, of Tattenhall, inset left, for services to the community and Sharon Tinn, of Ellesmere Port for services to adult education

Culture Secretary Sajid Javid wrote in a letter to Jo at the time of the announcement that she was named in the 2015 New Year Honours list “in acknowledgement of the significant contribution made over the years as a key cultural figure in the community of Chester, where her name has become synonymous with the Chester Mystery Plays.”
