THE annual Lords Taverners celebrity cricket match took place in the beautiful setting of Cholmondeley Castle Cricket ground, courtesy of Lord and Lady Cholmondeley.

This was the seventh year it has taken place and has become a firm favourite with supporters of the Lords and Lady Taverners.

Guests from all over the north west attended the event, sponsored by ITC Sport who have, over the years, been massive supporters of the Taverners.

The cricket day raised in the region of £30,000.

Head of Dee Banks School Ray Elliot along with members of his staff and pupils were present to receive a new mini bus from the Taverners. The school brought along its steel band to entertain guests.

TV presenter Chris Tarrant, an active member of the Lords’ Taverners and former national president, said: “It is good for guests to see what monies raised at events put on by volunteers of the charity are used for.

“In the last year, the Taverners have put one mini bus a week on the road, helping schools such as Dee Banks.”

Headteacher Mr Elliot said: “Without the generosity of the Taverners, pupils at the school would not be able to get around and visit places and events, it will make a tremendous difference to everyone at school. On behalf of his staff and pupils, he gave a heartfelt thanks to the Lords and Lady Taverners.”

Team members taking part included TV and radio presenter Nick Hancock, who captained one team and is president of the North West Lords Taverners; Who Wants To Be A Millionaire host Chris Tarrant; Adam Partridge auctioneer and star of BBCs Bargain Hunt and Flogit! ; actor Dean Andrews who starred in Last Tango in Halifax and Life on Mars; actor Gordon Kennedy who played Little John in the TV series Robin Hood and more.

The man of the match award, dedicated to the memory of football legend Gary Speed, was proudly presented by his father Roger Speed.

This year there were two winners of the award, Steve Froggatt ex-England and Aston Villa football star, and Andy Smart from The Comedy Store.

The proceeds of one of the auction prizes went to The Console Charity in memory of Gary.

Michael Owen has agreed to take over the role next year as a team captain.
