CHESTER Library will celebrate World Book Night on Saturday March 5 by staying open until 7pm.

As well as the library’s normal services staff will be giving away free books and hosting special activities.

From 5 - 6pm there will be an opportunity to make a bookmark with bedtime stories at 5.30pm.

Staff will also offer a happy hour or two from 5 -7pm on DVDs where borrowers pay for one and get one free.

Chester MP Stephen Mosley will attend the event which celebrates books and reading.

The country’s first ever World Book Night, two days after World Book Day, represents the most ambitious celebration of adult books and reading ever attempted in the UK and Ireland. Supported by the Publishers Association, the Booksellers Association, the Independent Publishers Guild and the BBC, one million books will be given away to members of the public across the UK and Ireland. The event will launched in Trafalgar Square by famous authors on March 4.

Dr Emma Rees, senior lecturer in the University of Chester’s English department, is one of 20,000 volunteers nationwide to help distribute the free books. Also giving out books at Upton Library later this month is Lynne Pearn, chairman of the Friends of Chester Literature Festival.
