THE Royal British Legion is calling on housing chiefs to get a move on to find a home for a soldier left paralysed following a motorbike accident.

Last week, The Chronicle told how Daniel Kay is battling to find a new home for his partner and four month old baby son.

Mr Kay, of High Street, Tarporley, is calling on the Chester & District Housing Trust and Weaver Vale Housing Trust in Northwich to find him a new home as a matter of urgency.

His world turned upside down in July when he was paralysed from the waist down after a motorbike accident in Delamere Forest.

After colliding with a car at 60mph, Daniel was thrown 30 metres and only remembers waking up in the intensive care unit the Countess of Chester Hospital.

The 32-year-old spent six weeks on a life support machine and his severed spinal cord means he will never walk again.

While fighting for his life, his partner Suzanne Woodcock - a former housekeeper at Rowton Hall Hotel in Chester - gave birth to the couple's son Aaron, now four months old.

Since October, Daniel has called on both housing trusts to provide his family with a bungalow.

As he is confined to a wheelchair, he is forced to sleep, wash and go to the toilet in the dining room at his rented terraced house.

The Royal British Legion has now joined the fight and has agreed to put pressure on both housing trusts to get something sorted.

The charity wants to help Daniel as he is an ex-serviceman and say they will do all they can to ensure Daniel's new home is accessible due to his disability.

Legion county field officer Jeff Harrison said: 'We read the story in The Chronicle and want to help.

'The Royal British Legion does not have a stock of housing but when it comes to the move we would be willing to help out in ensuring a new property is adapted to Mr Kay's disability.

'If we can put pressure on these housing trusts and social services then we will.

Once a new property has been found we will contact social services to ensure they make an assessment of Mr Kay's needs.'

Daniel served with the 1st Battalion, The Worcester-shire & Sherwood Foresters Regiment and was based at the Dale Barracks in Upton, Chester.

During his 12 years in the Army, he saw action in Bosnia and in 1994 also served in Armagh, Northern Ireland.

Daniel, who left hospital a month ago, said: 'The accident has turned my life upside down.

My partner is now my carer and I am forced to live and sleep in the dining room at our home. I have no privacy and have no dignity left.'

Daniel's call for a new home is backed by his GP, Dr Nigel O'Callaghan of The Health Centre practice in Tarporley.

In a letter to both trusts, Dr O'Callaghan says: 'Mr Kay lives with his partner and newborn baby in totally unsuitable accommodation.'

Both the Chester & District Housing Trust and Weaver Vale Housing Trust say they do not have a property available for Mr Kay at the moment. They say one will be offered as soon as is available. Claire Roberts, 18, has been charged in connection with Mr Kay's accident.

Miss Roberts, of Wolverham Road, Ellesmere Port, is accused of driving without due care and attention on Delamere Road, Hatchmere on Saturday, July 3. She has not pleaded to the charge.

Her case was mentioned at Northwich Magistrates' Court on Tuesday. Miss Roberts was not present at the hearing and her case was adjourned until January 5.
