SAVOURY snack fans are limbering up for the competitive second-ever World Oatcake Throwing Championship on Saturday.

The tournament will be one of the highlights of Alsager Carnival at Milton Gardens from 1pm to 5pm.

Entrance is 20p but only official 'Barry' oatcakes can be used from Barry's Pantry on Crewe Road.

The carnival and parade theme is Music Through the Ages, and organisers are hoping to hit all the right notes with visitors.

Carnival chairman Richard Sutton said: 'This year's carnival queen is Amy Standring of Cresswellshawe Road. Amy will lead the procession in an open top Rolls-Royce at noon from the Caradon car park through the town.

'Prizes are on offer for the best decorated float and the best dressed walkers in the parade.'Additionally, there is a tumbling act called Duo de Sol who will perform a series of acrobatic shows and stunts to amaze the crowds throughout the day.'

Food and drink will be available as well as all the usual attractions.

Money raised by the oatcake championship is donated to Alsager Round Table's charity account for local needy causes.
