POLICE seized a number of car stereos believed to have been stolen following a series of break-ins to vehicles in Northwich.

The equipment was seized during the execution of a search warrant at an address in Warren Avenue, Northwich, on August 19 and police are now tracing the owners of the kit.

Sgt Gavin Day of Northwich police said: 'In recent weeks we've seen a rise in thefts from cars. We've got lots of information coming in from various sources, such as members of the public, about who is responsible and where the items are going.

'One of the problems we do have is returning property to its rightful owner. It's important for people to record serial numbers and codes of items such as car stereos and satellite navigation systems so that we can easily return goods should they be stolen.'

Sgt Day's team has been using a decoy car kitted out with cameras in an attempt to catch thieves in the act, while patrols are targeting hot-spots.

Sgt Day said: 'The handful of offenders who are contributing to this should be aware that we will not tolerate their behaviour and are doing everything we can to take positive action against them.'
