More than 1,700 brave runners dug themselves out of bed for the 13.1-mile race on Sunday morning (January 17).

Duncan Cowley snapped these fantastic pictures of athletes and spectators enjoying the event.

Temperatures close to freezing and overnight snow had caused nerves on the morning after last year’s race was cancelled due to icy conditions.

But organisers Helsby Running Club said they were always confident and the race was a huge success.

Spokesman Steve Riley said: “We were confident the race would go ahead, but it was still a relief to see the runners set off after the disappointment of the last couple of years.

“There’s a lot of graft which goes in to the setting up of the race and it’s a delight to see it come off.

“You see lots of happy faces at the finish line and it’s great to know you’ve put on a good show for everyone.”

The race was won by Michael Kallenberg, of Royal Air Force Athletics and Cardiff AAC, with Gemma Connolly from the St Helens Sutton club winning the women’s event.

HRC chairwoman Jackie Keasley said: "We would like thank local residents for their patience during the road closures yesterday.

"There were so many people who had come out to support the runners along the route.

"We've also had lots of comments about how wonderful and encouraging the marshals and water station folks were despite being stood out the cold."
