A LEADING campaigner has lodged an official complaint with the Local Government Ombudsman over Cheshire County Council's decision to axe Gorsthills Primary.

Vice-chair of governors Ian Finlay is furious that the schools organ-isation committee decided to rubber-stamp the proposal last month and believes closing the school is 'unjust'.

He vowed to parents that he would fight on and is now hoping the ombudsman will back campaigners' in accusing the county council of maladministration.

Mr Finlay said: 'I believe there is enough evidence to support my claims that the decision to close Gorsthills is unjust.'

A county council spokesperson said they would only comment once the ombudsman has made his ruling.

Mr Finlay was in the public gallery at last Thursday's meeting of the full county council where he offered all 26 Conservative councillors a cup of Horlicks.

He made the tongue-in-cheek gesture because he believes the Tories will need a milky drink to help them sleep at night after voting unanimously to axe the school earlier this year.

He said: 'I sat patiently for two hours and as they retired for lunch asked the chairman if I could offer the Conservative councillors a cup of Horlicks.

'I was firmly told 'no' and he turned his back on me. I was then asked to leave.'

A county council spokesperson said: 'Nobody is allowed to speak at full council. If Mr Finlay had contacted us we could have informed him of this.'

Gorsthills is due to close next summer. The county council says it will be working with parents to find places for their children at other schools.
