CHESTER Cycling Campaign has welcomed the recent installation of new cycle parking facilities at Chester Station.

Managed by Arriva Trains Wales, the station has undergone major refurbishment. As part of the redevelopment the first phase of new cycle parking facilities are now in place.

Thirty-five Sheffield style stands have now been installed at the station providing facilities for up to 70 bicycles to be parked safely and securely.

Regular station user Peter Black said: “It is great to see the new cycle racks at the station. I commute to Manchester about four times a week.

“I live about a mile from Chester station and by cycling I can tie my bike up under cover and be on the train just ten minutes from leaving the house - much better than paying a fiver to park.”

Karen Kinder, station manager at Chester, said: “The new cycle parking facilities at Chester Station are good news for keen cyclists and those thinking about getting fit or choosing a more environmentally friendly mode of transport to the station.

“Set in a covered, well lit area of the station concourse, rail passengers can leave their bikes under the watch of new CCTV systems.”

Simon Brown from the Chester Cycle Campaign said: “Whilst we are nowhere near the situation such as in the Netherlands where some stations have multi storey cycle parking with literally hundreds of bikes used every day as part of the regular commute, the installation of these new racks is very welcome.

“With Chester’s Cycle Demonstration Town status, the presence of significant cycle facilities at key destinations around the city, such as at the station will help to prompt people to think bike as part of their travel pattern.”
