BROWNIES in Ashton Hayes have found a novel way to light up their lives.

In an effort to cut carbon emissions, the 1st Ashton Brownies have launched a Light Bulb Library at Ashton Hayes Primary School.

Brown Owl Tracey Todhunter explained: “The scheme gives residents the opportunity to borrow a range of low energy light bulbs to try in their own homes before making a purchase.”

To mark the launch of the environmentally friendly lending library, the Brownies received a VIP visitor. Independent MP Clare Short visited their Friday night meeting and presented the Brownies with certificates.

Tracey added: “We are very excited that Ms Short accepted our invitation to visit the village. She was very impressed by the girls’ initiative to reduce the carbon emissions of their families.”

Inspired by a conversation with Chris Goodall (author of How to Live a Low Carbon Life), Tracey successfully landed a deal with E.ON to buy bulbs at the same discounts offered to high street retailers.

Ashton Hayes Parish Council declared its ambition to be the first carbon neutral village in England in January 2006.

Since the launch a number of community groups have taken up the challenge to reduce their carbon footprint.

The primary school has achieved its silver Eco Schools Award and is working to improve the school grounds to enable the children to grow vegetables thanks to the help of volunteers from Ash-worth Time Bank who are passing their skills on to a new generation at the weekly Eco Club.
