A boy 'climbed into a tank at Blue Planet Aquarium to steal a turtle' - which he then ran off with hidden under a jumper.
Cheshire Police have released a CCTV image of a woman they would like to speak to after Clyde was stolen yesterday (August 30).
Officers are urgently trying to find the turtle as she may die without proper care.
They are appealing for any information from visitors to the aquarium in Ellesmere Port in Tuesday.
Update: Clyde has now been found safe
The boy was walking around the Cheshire Oaks attraction soaking wet and without a shirt on so may have attracted attention.
Police believe he hid Clyde under a jumper as he strolled away.
Officers 'keeping an open mind'
DS Rob Grantham said: “Our investigation has so far established that a young boy managed to get into the tank and remove the turtle.
“The boy was completely soaked and had no top on, which may have attracted your attention if you had been there yesterday.
“The boy appeared to be carrying something under a jumper, which we believe was the turtle known as Clyde.
“If you recognise the woman in the CCTV or have any information that may lead to the safe return of Clyde, I’d urge you to call 101.
”We’re keeping an open mind as to why Clyde was taken but we need to stress that without specialist care, Clyde may die.”
Cheshire Police initially posted about the theft on Facebook on Tuesday evening.
The turtle is approximately 20cm long.
