WHITEGATE Primary School wants to sever its link with Wood-ford Lodge and Verdin high schools.

The school acts as a feeder for pupils who are going on to the Winsford schools. But bosses want its feeder status to be reconsidered so it is linked to Tarporley County High School because staff at White-gate blame its current link for falling roll numbers.

A spokesman for Whitegate Primary School said: 'Whitegate Church of England-aided Primary School has found itself, though no fault of its own, in difficulty with secondary school transfer and as a result of this has experienced falling numbers of pupils on its school roll.

'We are seeking reassessment of the criteria of the high school transfer admission procedure because we wish to increase the preference of parents for their children from primary school. We are seeking to be reassessed to Tarporley High School through the corridor of the civil parish boundary of Little Budworth.'

In a recent public meeting held by the chairman of governors, the Rev Lesley Eden, there was a large turnout as people were keen to hear the proposals.

Eddisbury MP Stephen O'Brien attended the meeting and gave his backing to the proposal. He said: 'I pay tribute to the professionalism and determination of the governors and the school and the headteacher and all Whitegate school staff in raising the issue and identifying the campaign to resolve this satisfactorily.

'The school, its staff, governors, parents, children and the wider Whitegate community have my continuing and positive support in securing the education choices that they richly deserve.'
