BOOK lovers are in for a treat when the annual big book swap heralds the start of the Shell Chester Literature Festival on the Town Hall Square this Saturday, October 2.

It will feature the customary trestle tables laden with books of all sorts, ready for the simple bring-a-book, take-a-book system that has proved such a hit in the past.

For those without a book to swap, there are modest prices of 50p for a paperback, £1 for a hardback.

Organised by the Friends of Shell Chester Literature Festival, the event provides a central point for information on the festival, which opens on October 18, and also raises funds for Book Aid International – last year the sum was £300.

It’s a charity dear to John Elsley, retired bookseller and a Friend who helped to launch the book swap ten years ago. He is delighted at the development of both the event and the charity.

He said: “There will be a wide range of books, light and serious reading, at the swap and I know any proceeds will be put to good use. I have seen the good work the charity does. It began in a small way. Now people go to schools and libraries in Africa and other countries to see what is needed. Publishers supply many new books. Transport costs are high so money is always needed.’

Mr Elsley is a constant book collector and he will be supplying from his collection for the book swap, which will run fromŠ10am-3.30pm.

Full information about the festival will be available at the book swap stalls and tickets can be booked on site at the visitor information centre.

Friends of the Festival will be on hand to talk about festival events – there’s something for everyone – including a brand new festival for children and teens – GobbleDEEbook.
