A Blacon pub is to be demolished to make way for affordable housing after months of speculation.

The derelict Highfield Pub has stood empty since the last pint was pulled over a year ago.

Now, after months of speculation over the future of the popular drinking hole, Sanctuary have confirmed they have acquired the building and are preparing to place affordable housing on the site.

Previously there were rumours that the 50-year-old pub could be turned into a Tesco Express, but the supermarket has since said it had no interest in the site.

The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) said, in a statement posted on a report on the Chester and South Clwyd branch website: “Purpose built estate pubs such as the Highfield, which are predominantly wet-led, are evidently most vulnerable to cheap supermarket booze but it still seems staggering that an area the size of Blacon now only has the Waggon and Horses still open.

“Keg the lot of them but we’re sure the communities affected lament their passing.”

A spokesperson for Sanctuary said it was in process of consulting with the local community. A planning application is yet to be submitted.

He said: “We have acquired the site and are in the process of consulting with the local community so they can help inform our proposals for its future.

Further details about the future of the pub will be revealed once the full planning application is submitted to Cheshire West and Chester Council
