Children at a Chester primary school were ready for blast off as they looked to the starts for inspiration during Space Week.

Belgrave Primary School in Westminster Park ‘launched’ their school space week with an assembly led by Year 5.

The children explained to the whole school about their Tim Peake Primary Space Project which includes an investigation into growing seeds which have been in space.

Activities through the week included building space rockets, maths about the moon, creating abstract artwork, writing descriptions about imaginary planets and aliens, postcards home from space, information books and even self-portraits as an astronaut.

The week finished with an ‘alien’ day for the younger children and a rocket launch for the older children.

The pupils visited a galaxy in the mobile planetarium in school for the day, while Year 5 pupils spent the day at Daresbury laboratory near Warrington taking part in science sessions including making a comet.

The theme week organisers Jane Redmond and Jane Salter said: “The week was a great success, we are one of 14 Cheshire schools to be selected to be a ‘Tim Peake’ school through which we have worked closely with Sue Andrews, our space ambassador, in partnership with the European Space Agency.

“We hope one of Belgrave’s children may be inspired to become an astronaut like Tim Peake in the future!”
