PUPILS at Abbey Gate College, Saighton, have achieved the highest GCSE results for two years.

Yesterday the school's pass rate was announced, with 93% of pupils earning A*-C grades.

Headteacher Edward Mitchell said: 'I am especially pleased with the boys' results, 46.3% A*-A passes which just edges ahead of the girls.

'However in terms of A*-C, the girls have an advantage, 98.1% being their pass rate.

'Once again our pupils across a very wide curriculum with demanding exam and coursework preparation have shown commendable skill and knowledge. The college is delighted with their success.

'The staff also deserve the highest praise for their consistent performance in support of our pupils.'

Among the best results were Richard Monaghan from Tarporley who earned six A* and three A grades. He said he was particularly pleased with his A* in maths, which he hopes to study at university after completing A-levels in maths, physics, geography and biology.

Other high-flyers at the school were William Howes from Waverton, with five A*s and four As and Martin Dixon from Marton who achieved five A*s three As and one B.

Charlotte Thomas from Tattenhall gained four A*s, four As and one B, while Nathan Wren from Holt gained three A*s and six As.

Also commended were Ysabel Bandell from Wybunbury with three A*s, five As and one B, Daniel Kingsley from Port Sunlight who earned two A*s, six As and one B and Robert Pierce from Dodleston who had one A*, seven As and one B.
