DON’T let bogus callers or distraction burglars ruin the festive season.

Every year hundreds of people are approached by these criminals who often prey on the most vulnerable members of society.

And despite increased awareness and positive action from the police it seems some bogus callers are still looking to target Chester area residents.

This Christmas, the message from Inspector Phil Hodgson of Cheshire Constabulary is clear: “Give them a frosty reception.”

He said: “Distraction burglars and bogus callers use a variety of techniques to get into people’s homes, but each individual will usually use the same excuse.

“These can range from claiming to be an official from the water board to asking if a pet has run into the victim’s garden.

“In the latest incident, at Whitehall Place, Frodsham, the offender claimed drains had collapsed and that he needed paying to repair them. I urge all residents to be aware of this type of crime.

“If someone calls claiming to be from an organisation or authority, ask to see identification. If they are genuine they will be happy to produce ID.

“If you still have any doubts, call the company they claim to represent or ring the police.”

All residents should use the Lock, Stop, Chain and Check guidelines.

Make sure the door chain is on before answering and check the ID of anyone calling who says they are from an official body.
