Atlantic Drifters Tom Brunwin and Dave Lambert MBE, of the Army Air Corps, are doing the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge in December this year, where they will travel 3000 miles in a rowing boat seven metres in length and under two metres wide!
Founder of OAKS Margaret Jarrett, of Guilden Sutton, was born in Bo, Sierra Leone, coming to live in the UK as a young teenager. A mother of three and recent grandmother, Margaret works in Ellesmere Port in the Care Industry.
Following a visit to see her own grandmother Mabel at the end of the 10 year civil war in 2003, she was so greatly moved by witnessing the levels of poverty and depravation she vowed to do something positive to aid her native home. Her first step was to purchase a piece of bush-land in a remote area of Bo.
Father Francis Maple, of St Francis RC Church, offered her financial support to start to build a school for underprivileged children who had no other access to education and the OAKS school opened in October 2007. The ‘dream’ is to apply for Sierra Leone Government Assistance to finance the staff wages, thus enabling OAKS to focus all fund raising to expand into Senior Secondary School by building further premises.
