Police have cordoned off an area of Chester city centre over fears a large window could fall on somebody after it became unsafe.

Officers attended the rear of B&M, Hamilton Place, just before 3pm on Sunday after being notified the fourth floor lift shaft window had cracked and partially shattered on to the ground below.

Police taped off the area to stop people and cars passing underneath while a PCSO has been guarding the scene. One theory is the window may have cracked due to the cold weather.

Sergeant Andy Burrage, of Chester Inner Neighbourhood Policing Unit, said: “Police attended and cordoned off the road as a precaution whilst a risk assessment took place.

"Further parts of the window fell to the ground during this time and it was decided that the repairs would be made in daylight hours.

“In order to protect the safety of the public we have decided to close Hamilton Place to pedestrians and vehicles until these repairs have been carried out. It is anticipated that the road will reopen late afternoon on Monday (December 29).

“I can confirm that no criminal investigation is underway and that the cordon is purely a public safety measure until such time as the glass has been made safe. No persons have been injured as a result of the incident.”
