A man has been charged with arson with intent to endanger life at his own home from which his family had to escape in the early hours.

Anthony Lennon, 51, is accused of setting fire to his house in Cliveden Road, Lache, at the junction with Poplar Road, where fire crews were called at 1.40am yesterday (Friday).

Mr Lennon's wife Christine, his three grandchildren and the father of the youngest - a three-month-old baby - escaped unharmed after being alerted by a neighbour who banged on the door.

The blaze began in a store room at the rear of the house which is integral to the structure of the property. Items of sentimental value such as family photographs were destroyed.

Although the fire had begun to spread it is not believed much smoke had entered the building.

It is understood Mr Lennon was arrested from inside the property and was questioned yesterday afternoon.

He was due to appear before Chester magistrates this morning.
