AMAZED residents of a Crewe street are asking how serious a water company is about conserving stocks after watching a leak in the road run for more than a month.

And Coleridge Way householders have blasted United Utilities for the state the road has been left in after the leak was finally repaired.

They reported the burst water main on November 1 but say nothing was done about it until last Wednesday. Now they say that two potholes, the result of the leaks, remain un-filled and present a hazard to passersby and children.

One of the residents, David Peacock, 43, said: 'I think it is absolutely disgusting that United Utilities allowed this leak to continue for over a month.

'Children use this road on a regular basis to walk to school and the way they have now left it simply isn't safe. Two holes left on either side of the road have also left driveways un-accessible to their owners.'

Waldron Ward borough councillor Eddie Ankers backed up the residents' claims, saying: 'We are constantly told to conserve water, but I do not think that the water utilities follow their own remit.

'Despite numerous phone calls from the residents and promises on several occasions that the leak would be fixed the next day, thousands of gallons have literally gone down the drain.

'The water that has leaked has damaged the roadway, and bits of debris have been hurled into residents' drives.'

A United Utilities spokeswoman, said: 'We are sorry for the length of the delay in fixing this leak. Occasionally leaks prove very difficult to find and this has been the case in Coleridge Way.

'Rather than spend more time trying different methods and digging different holes, we decided to put a new piece of pipe in.

'This was done on December 6 and thankfully the problem has now been fixed.

'We would like to say thank you to our customers, who reported the leak, for their patience.'
