ANGLERS have given a cash boost to a charity campaign led by Crewe woman Irene Edwards.

A cheque for £260 was presented to Irene for Christie's Cancer Hospital in Manchester after the Wyche Anglers at Nantwich staged a fishing tournament, each donating £5 to take part.

Winner David Holman, from Crewe, hooked a 21lb 9oz whopper while Timmy Evans, also from Crewe, came second with a 21lbs 4oz carp.

Now Irene is busy planning her next variety show at the Lyceum Theatre on November 12.

She stages three shows a year at the Crewe theatre to raise funds for the hospital where she was treated 15 years ago.

She said: 'I try always to feature the best of home-grown singing and dancing talent as well as a star turn.

'I am pleased to say Stan Boardman will be making a welcome return to the Lyceum. He's such a funny man and last appeared there in a tribute show for George Roper, his old friend from The Comedians. George lived locally and was a big supporter of Christie's.'

Last year Irene, who works at the Asda store in Crewe, was presented with an award after raising £100,000 for the hospital.

On September 23 there will be a Crewe street collection for Christie's and on December 8, she will host an Abba tribute night at Nantwich Civic Hall.

A stall, manned by Irene and volunteers at the Nantwich Show made £1,000.
