A landlord and landlady of a well-known Chester pub have been invited to the official residence of Prince Charles and Camilla because of their support for the War Memorials Trust.

Mike and Christina Mercer, who run The Albion pub, always support the charity which works for the protection and conservation of war memorials in the UK.

The issue is close to Mike’s heart because he has a passion for the Great War period and The Albion pub is festooned with memorabilia from that era.

Now the couple have been invited to a reception at Clarence House, the official London residence of The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, and Princes William and Harry, as a thank you for their support and fundraising efforts over the years. Camilla is patron of the War Memorials Trust.

Mike, who has been landlord of The Albion for more than 40 years, said: “Sometimes Christina and I will go down to London and watch a show and walk past Charles and Camilla’s house but you never expect you will get the opportunity to go inside. I suppose there is a strong possibility Camilla will be there given she is patron.

“We get all sorts of people phoning us up from Children in Need and major disaster appeals but we stick to our guns, as much as we sympathise, because we have our own in-house charity.”

This year is the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War with lots of related events expected to take place at the pub.
