A TEAM from Airbus Broughton turned their skill for making aircraft wings into an aptitude for assembling flat pack garden furniture when they took part in a volunteering day in support of the Alzheimer’s Society.

June Davies, of Warren Hall Lodge, Broughton, lost her husband John to the disease in 2011 after 54 years of marriage and has since been a supporter of Airbus in the UK’s current partner charity, the Alzheimer’s Society. So when Mrs Davies mentioned, during a fundraising event in Broughton, that she needed some help to sort out her garden, a team from the A380 wing assembly factory in Broughton stepped in to assist.

Nicola Hickman, who was one of the team from the A380 factory who donned her gardening gloves, said: “Between us we trimmed hedges, cut down some trees, mowed the lawn, painted fences and jet washed paths, as well as assembling some garden furniture which Mrs Davies had been given by her daughters.”

Mrs Davies added: “The team from Broughton did a really tremendous job. Keeping the garden straight, especially after such a hard winter, can be a big job for one person so I am really grateful for the assistance.”

She was attending a sponsored pool marathon being held by her grandson Geoff Bradford, who works at the Broughton Sports and Social Club when she mentioned her need for a garden makeover. The pool marathon also raised more than £1,000 for the Alzheimer’s Society.

Since January, Airbus employees have raised more than £21,000 to help support those whose lives are affected by Alzheimer’s.
