A Chester schoolgirl has made a meteoric rise though the ranks since introducing herself to handball only four weeks ago.

Fiona Parker, a Year 10 student at Abbey Gate College turned up for trials one evening when Deva Handball coach Gary Kelsall, asked for nominations for the vacant goalkeeper’s position

Fiona plays in goal for the college hockey team and her ability, bravery and shot stopping skills soon became apparent and consequently she was selected for the Cheshire Girls Under 16 team who were playing in the regional finals at Warrington.

Fiona made a major contribution to the teams’ success in beating Staffordshire and Merseyside and will now represent the North in the national finals which are held in Wolverhampton on March 15.

A college spokesman said: “We are very proud of her success and it shows what can be achieved with a lot of determination, desire and self- belief (plus a healthy dose of skill and  bravery!)”
