A 'serious' multi-vehicle crash means the A55 is closed.

The collision involved a beige Citroen Picasso, a white Ford Transit van and a white DAF HGV lorry near Balderton Westbound at 11.36am on Friday (September 4).

An ambulance and air ambulance have been called and Cheshire Police are also at the scene.

Traffic will be diverted onto the A483 towards Saltney and then through the town on the A5104.

Eyewitness James Whittall said: "There were three vehicles in the lay-by, All the vehicles looked to have significant damage and there was an ATS van which had been smashed to pieces.

"You could see inside as the side had been ripped off.

"It was difficult to tell what types of vehicles they were because they were so badly damaged. There was debris all over the road.

"There were three people on the scene. There was an old lady on the floor in the recovery position being helped another woman.

"It was awful, my partner felt physically sick when she saw the state of the vehicles."

To allow the air ambulance to land the road was closed in both directions from the Posthouse Roundabout, junction 38, to junction 36.

Drivers are advised to avoid the area if possible.

Arriva Buses Wales have suspended the Chester service X4 until further notice.
