The family of a great grandfather, who died in a crash on the A55 near Chester, have paid tribute.

William Owen, 81, from Mold, was involved in the three-vehicle collision near Balderton at 11.35am on September 4.

An 80-year-old woman was also airlifted to Aintree Hospital, but is now making a 'good recovery'.

Mr Owen's family said: "William was a family man who this week celebrated his 57th wedding anniversary to his wife Iris Rosemary Owen.

"He leaves four children, eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

"Known as Doug by his friends and family he was a keen rugby supporter spending time supporting the local Mold Rugby teams."

A beige Citroen Xsara Picasso, a white Ford Transit van and a white DAF HGV lorry were involved in the accident, which happened on the A55 between the Westbound junction 36A at Broughton and junction 38, the Posthouse Roundabout.

The 46-year-old HGV driver was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, and has since been released on bail.

Mr Owen's family said: "We wish to express our heartfelt thanks to the driver of the van who initially stopped to give assistance and the lady who helped Rosemary immediately after the accident whilst waiting for the paramedics to arrive.”

Inspector Liz Cunningham said: “We are looking to appeal to anyone who was in the local area at the time of the incident and believes that they may be able to help with our investigation.

“I am particularly interested in speaking to anyone who might have seen a broken down Citroen Xsara Picasso and a white recovery vehicle on the hard shoulder around the time of the collision."
