£500k grant for Neston recreation centre

A £500,000 grant is being offered towards significant investment in Neston Recreation Centre it has been revealed.

Neston ward borough councillor Andy Williams (Lab) asked community and wellbeing cabinet member Louise Gittins (Lab, Little Neston and Burton) that given a commitment to increasing physical activity in the borough ‘what progress has the council made in securing funding for the revamping of Neston recreation centre’.

Cllr Gittins replied: “I am extremely pleased to tell council that we have been offered a grant of £500,000 from Sport England to match significant further investment by Brio Leisure in Neston Recreation centre.

“The funding will improve the swimming pool changing rooms, provide a new gym and make the building much more attractive and accessible.

“The future programme will provide more opportunities for the community to use the facility as well as enhancing it for Neston High School.”

She continued: “We are extremely grateful to Sport England for recognising the importance that an enhanced facility would mean to the health and wellbeing for the people of Neston and the surrounding area.”

The move, Cllr Gittins believed ‘is a further example of collaboration, in this case between the council, the town council, Neston High School, Brio Leisure and the children’s centre’.

Asked by Cllr Williams when the investment would be made she replied: “The full funding package needs to be confirmed and finalised. Following this it is anticipated that start on site would be late May/June subject to planning permission being granted for the new reception.”

Cllr Gittins gave an assurance in 2015 there were no plans to close the centre.
