STUDENTS at West Cheshire College were given a dancing masterclass by elderly care home residents.

They may all be over 65, but residents from Florence Grogan House in Blacon showed the youngsters a thing or two about dancing at an event held as part of ‘Tuesday Tasters’.

The new initiative, led by the college, encourages older people in the community to take part in fun and educational activities with the younger generation.

The monthly events are an opportunity for intergenerational bonding, and give older people the chance to revisit former hobbies.

During the tea dance a medley of songs from the 1950s filled the room as young and old took to the floor to show off their best moves. The music of Frank Sinatra brought back memories for many residents.

College students then enjoyed a boogie to modern music.

The day was also marked with an afternoon tea and a free prize draw, in which resident Ellen Roberts won a VIP day at Mecca Bingo.

Molly Kendal, activities co-ordinator at Florence Grogan, said: “We all had a brilliant day at the college. It was a great to see our residents sharing memories and dance routines from their youth, while picking up some new moves.”

Future events include a Wii Fit lesson on February 21 and a ‘silver surfing’ session on March 20.
