Hundreds turned out from far and wide to raise much needed funds for The Hospice of The Good Shepherd in memory of a much loved and missed pub landlady.

Dawn Holmes, 55, ran the Horse and Jockey and Sir Robert in Ellesmere Port with her husband of 35 years John.

She tragically lost her battle with cancer and passed away last October after being diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and a brain tumour earlier in the year.

So well-regarded was Dawn that friends, family and pub regulars banded together to raise funds to send her and John on holiday.

John said at the time: “She was just a fantastic lady and she would have done anything for anyone.

“Anyone who met Dawn would just fall in love with her straight away – she was that type of person She was a very, very brave lady.”

In a second ‘Do It 4 Dawn’ fundraiser at The Horse & Jockey, local people turned out in force with others who had travelled specially for the event to bring in almost £2,000 in a single day through collections, donations and a charity auction.

Music was provided all day and into the night on an outdoor stage by bands who donated their time for free.

Ellesmere Port band Problem Child, Local Lads Make Good, The Vinyls, Meet The Robots, Kirstie Thompson, The Shed Brothers and Ragamuffin were all involved while barbecue food was available and a bouncy castle was provided by Billy’s Bouncy Castle hire.

Auction prizes were donated by many individuals and local businesses including Dream World Photography, Charley’s Ceramics and Fagan’s Café amongst others while pets were not forgotten either thanks to prizes from Emma’s Dog Walking and Scarlett’s Dog Grooming.

Dawn’s daughter Kirstie Holmes said: “I’d just really like to thank the staff and everyone who worked so hard all day to raise such an unbelievable amount. I’m sure we all made my mum super proud! We did it for Dawn”.

Organisers hope to make Do It 4 Dawn an annual event in the town in an effort to raise money for local charities in memory of an inspirational woman and to keep the name of Dawn Holmes very much alive. July 23 has already been decided for the 2016 fundraiser.
