Our previous photographs of Chester in the 1950s have proved very popular , and now we are continuing to look for images of what our city used to look like decades ago.

Freelance writer Paul Hurley, from Winsford , collaborated with Chester historian Len Morgan to compile the book Chester Through Time, and we have republished some of their pictures here, which show some of Chester’s best known streets in the 1950s and 1960s.

Most of the city has been altered with care and consideration for what was there before, write the authors, and you can make your own judgments of that from these photographs.

Some of the familiar streets you can see in the book include Lower Bridge Street pictured in 1967, before it was redeveloped into the office complex Heritage Court in 1985; and the junction of where Watergate Street now meets The Cross, pictured in 1953, when it used to house a popular grocery next to where Timpson is today.

Nicholas Street is also shown in 1964, as building work started to widen the street and replace most of the buildings, and a row of Georgian houses, known as Pill-Box Promenade because they were mainly occupied by doctors, still stand today.
