It was a sad day for Chester when the city’s last remaining cinema closed its doors in October last year.

Many of us were upset to see Cineworld on the Greyhound Park follow in the wake of the Odeon,  which closed in 2007 – not least because cinema in Chester used to be such a prevalent fixture.

We all have memories of the various cinemas in Chester throughout the decades, and this is what compelled Chronicle reader Roy Westbury to send us  a picture of one of the city’s best known cinemas, The Tatler - later renamed The Classic.

Roy said: “The picture was taken on the last week it was open, and I believe that the display board shows the last film that was screened.

“Great cinema, I lived at the back of the cinema in Priory Place  and remember the difficulty they had demolishing the building – it  didn’t want to come down!

“Before they changed the name, there used to be a globe on the wall, just below the name and the position of it can be still be seen in the photo.”

Other cinemas included the ABC Regal Cinema which opened on Foregate Street in 1937. In 1959 the name Regal was dropped and it was referred to as ABC until 1987 when it was renamed Cannon before closing in 1990.

The Gaumont Palace cinema opened on Brook Street in 1931 and even included a restaurant inside. It was considered quite a palatial venue, with Cliff Richard once performing there before it closed in 1961.

Elsewhere, the Music Hall on Northgate and St Werburgh Street was one of the city's oldest cinemas before that also closed in 1961. The first film it ever showed was Charlie Chaplin's The Kid, which opened in 1921.

But perhaps one of Chester’s most famous cinemas was The Odeon, opening in 1936.

It developed steadily in size over the years, and for years was the only cinema in the city-centre.  Chester-born James Bond star Daniel Craig apparently saw his first Bond film at The Odeon as a child.

It closed on June 14 2007 after the previous Chester City Council announced plans to turn it into a theatre.

But there still existed one cinema in Chester - the multiplex Cineworld on the Greyhound  Park. This opened as a six-screen Cannon cinema on December 8 1990 and underwent many a name change over the years - including MGM in 1991, Virgin Cinemas in 1995 and UGC in 1999.  It became Cineworld in 2005 until it closed in 2013.
